D01.1 · THE OFL

Free, with one rule.

The OFL permits use, study, modification and redistribution at no cost. Its one real condition: the fonts themselves can’t be sold standalone — which never affects brand use.

Everywhere, no fees.

Desktop, web, app, print, embedding in PDFs and products — all permitted without per-seat or per-view fees. Type can be used freely across the whole system.

EB Garamond, Archivo, JetBrains.

The system’s three families — EB Garamond, Archivo, JetBrains Mono — are all OFL. The choice was made partly for design, partly so licensing would never block adoption.

Each font’s OFL text and source are kept in the license register. If a partner or vendor asks, the proof is one link away.

Own the delivery.

OFL allows self-hosting, so fonts ship from WCN’s own domain rather than a third-party service. That means no external dependency, no tracking, and full version control.

Ship only what’s used.

Fonts are subset to the characters actually needed, cutting file size dramatically. Latin-first, with extended ranges loaded only where the content needs them.

Fast, and stable.

Fonts use woff2, preload for the critical display face, and font-display:swap so text never blocks render. Performance is part of the brand experience.

D02.4 · FALLBACK STACK

Graceful without them.

A defined fallback stack — matched serif, sans and mono — keeps layout stable if a font fails to load. The page is readable and on-brand even mid-load.

Icons and illustrations are brand assets that often start life as third-party work. This page draws the line between what WCN owns outright and what it merely licenses — and tracks both.

Bespoke icons and illustrations are commissioned with IP assignment, so WCN owns them outright. Ownership is what lets the set evolve without re-licensing.

Borrowed, with terms.

Where a third-party icon set is used, its license and scope are recorded. Free-tier sets often carry attribution or use limits that are easy to violate unknowingly.

D03.3 · ATTRIBUTION

Credit where due.

Assets that require attribution have it documented and placed correctly — in the colophon or asset register. Missing attribution turns a free license into infringement.

Every asset, accounted.

Custom and licensed assets alike are entered in the license register with their status. The goal: for any icon in use, the brand can say exactly what it’s allowed to do.

Photography carries some of the trickiest rights — stock licenses with usage limits, expiry dates, and the people in the frame. This page keeps every image cleared for how WCN actually uses it.

Read the fine print.

Stock licenses vary — editorial vs commercial, web vs print, impression caps. Each image’s license type is recorded so it’s never used beyond what was bought.

D04.2 · USAGE SCOPE

Bought for a purpose.

A license bought for a blog post doesn’t cover a billboard. Usage scope is matched to actual use, and expansions trigger a re-license, not a quiet stretch.

D04.3 · EXPIRY

Licenses end.

Many stock licenses expire. Expiry dates are tracked so an image isn’t still live on the site years after the right to use it lapsed.

D04.4 · MODEL RELEASES

People need permission.

Any identifiable person in a commercial image needs a model release; property sometimes needs one too. These link to the releases held in the contracts cluster.

The sonic logo, video soundtracks and UI sounds all carry rights. This page keeps WCN’s audio cleared — owning what’s bespoke and properly licensing what isn’t.

The sonic logo is commissioned with full IP assignment, like the visual mark. It’s a brand asset — WCN owns the recording and the composition outright.

Music in video.

Any music in video needs sync rights — and for known recordings, both the composition and the master. Bespoke or properly-licensed library tracks avoid the rights maze.

D05.3 · LIBRARY MUSIC

Stock, with terms.

Library tracks are licensed with scope and territory noted, the same as stock photos. “Royalty-free” still means terms — it isn’t “no rules.”

D05.4 · USAGE

UI sounds included.

Even small UI and notification sounds carry rights. They’re sourced bespoke or from cleared libraries and logged, so nothing in the product is an unlicensed clip.

Scattered licenses are unprovable licenses. The register is the single record of every font, icon, image and track the brand uses — with scope, seats, expiry and proof in one place.

Every licensed or owned asset has a row — fonts, icons, photos, music. If it’s used in the brand, it’s in the register; if it’s not in the register, it shouldn’t be used.

Asset, source, license type, scope, seat count, expiry, and a link to the proof. Consistent fields make the register answerable, not just a list.

D06.3 · SEATS & SCOPE

Stay inside the lines.

Where a license caps seats or impressions, the register tracks usage against the cap. It turns “are we compliant?” from a guess into a lookup.

Never lapse silently.

Expiry dates drive alerts ahead of time, so a license is renewed or the asset retired before use becomes infringement. The register is active, not a graveyard.
